Hello All,
Do any of you make dumb mistakes like I do? I am a 73 year old man of average to above average intelligence that has learned some out of books but mostly the hard way a heck of a lot of things over the years. Just when I get to the point of feeling smart and cocky, I get the chocks knocked out.
Last week I ordered a new scope, a Leupold VX-III 6.5-20 40mm for my Savage Model 12FV in 22-250. I have a Zeiss Conquest 3-9 on it. An outstanding scope for hunting, but not too good for developing loads.
The UPS man brought it today. Yes, it is 30 mm, and yes, the Zeiss is 1 inch, a simple fact I failed to consider. So much for the simple switch I was going to make. I know none of you ever make that kind of mistake. Now to wait a week until Midway ships me some new rings that will fit.
Oh well, … .

Bert, if that is the biggest problem you have, life is pretty good! ;-)

I can't tell you how many times I've ordered the wrong height rings. Just as bad as the wrong diameter. This thread has prompted me to change my signature. _________________ "I may be dumb, but I'm not stupid." - Terry Bradshaw |

How 'bout the time I went to the varmint field and forgot to put the rifle bolt in the case with me...
...or the time I took my .308 Savage 10FP (which I had installed a laminate Savage stock on) to the varmint field, thinking I'd cased my 22-250. I had the 22-250 ammo, and a .308 rifle.
Or once I used a Lee Collet die to neck size some brass which had been fired in one of my older .243 Winchester rifles. I had 50 rounds. I had traded that rifle off. None of those shells would chamber in my Douglas barreled 788 Remington rifle.
But the good news is I haven't shot my chronograph.
Yet. ;)

Hey Dan I did do that once.
But after I got a new sensor to replace it I welded a piece of 1/4 thick steel plate angled at 45 degrees in front of each sensor. I hope I never do it again but maybe it will stop any damage the next time me or some of my buddies do hit it. |

How about going hunting with a Rem 7400 and forgetting the 3 mags for the rifle? I did. We hit every hunting store on the way and I paid 1 1/2 more than what it's worth - lesson learned.
I haven't shot my Chrono (PACT Pro) but I keep taking out the skyscreen sensors with a handgun. Last year it cost me about $200. |

Hey Bert, you never learn anything doing everything right all the time…..
Trick is to learn from others mistakes, though I haven’t got that quite right so far
Think my worsted mistake is forgetting my mag and having to single load at a speed shoot

Nice to see Savage shooters here. I'm going to feel right at home. I shoot four that I built in 280AI, 6mm Norma BR, 260 Rem and 223. Next long range project is going to be a 284 heavy barrel.
